Muhurat Consultation
A muhurat is an auspicious time calculated from the panchang and from the charts of the people involved. Divyam Vaastu calculates muhurat for house entry, weddings, business openings and other significant events, for clients in India and abroad, practising since 1992.
What a muhurat actually is
Muhurat is the practice of choosing a time. The panchang gives the framework for that choice: the tithi or lunar day, the vaar or weekday, the nakshatra the moon is passing through, the yoga and the karana. Each of these changes through the day rather than sitting still, and each carries a different weight depending on what is being started.
That framework on its own is not a muhurat. It tells you which stretches of time are broadly workable and which are best avoided, in general, for anybody. What turns it into a muhurat is the second half of the work, which is reading it against the specific event and the specific people.
So the calculation begins from the panchang and then narrows. The nature of the event decides which factors carry weight, since what matters for a house entry is not what matters for a wedding or the first day of a business. The charts of the people involved decide whether a window that looks clean in the almanac is actually suitable for them, because a time can be generally favourable and still sit badly against an individual chart. The place decides the rest, since the panchang is calculated against sunrise and sunset and those move with longitude and latitude.
A muhurat is therefore computed, for one event and one set of people, in one place. It is not looked up.
Griha pravesh and house entry
This is the request we receive most often, usually with a date pressure attached to it, such as possession being handed over, a rental agreement ending or family travelling in from outside the city.
For a house entry we work from the charts of the people who will live in the property, the window you can actually accommodate, and the location of the house. The type of entry matters as well, since a first entry into a newly built house, entry into a previously occupied property and a return after major renovation are not treated identically.
The property itself is part of the picture. A well chosen time for entering a house does not resolve something structural in the layout, and if you are about to move into a home with a difficult entrance or a kitchen and toilet placement worth addressing, that is better known before you move in than after the furniture is in place. Where a client is taking a muhurat for a property they have just bought, we usually suggest looking at the layout in the same conversation.
Weddings and vivah muhurat
For a marriage, both charts are involved. A vivah muhurat is read against the bride's chart and the groom's chart together rather than against one of them, which is the main reason a date circulating as broadly auspicious may not be the right date for a particular couple.
Beyond the two charts, we look at the panchang factors that classical texts treat as significant for marriage, the place where the ceremony will be held, and the practical window the two families have to work within. Where a Kundali matching has already been done with us, that reading feeds directly into the muhurat work.
Business openings and other events
Muhurat is also taken for the opening of a shop or an office, the first day of trading, the foundation laying of a building, the start of construction, and the purchase or first use of a new vehicle. In each case the chart of the person taking the step is read alongside the event, and for a commercial premises the layout of the space is often worth reviewing in the same conversation.
Why a general list is not a muhurat
Published lists of auspicious dates are calculated for nobody in particular. They apply the panchang for a chosen location and stop there, which means they cannot account for the charts of the people whose event it is, and they cannot account for where those people actually are. That is the part of the calculation that decides suitability, and it is the part a list cannot contain. This is the whole reason the work is done individually and the reason no dates appear on this page.
How to request one
Tell us four things. The event, so we know which factors carry weight. The people involved, with birth date, birth time and birth place for each, since the calculation is read against their charts. The approximate window you can work within, whether that is a fortnight, a month or a season. And the location where the event will take place.
The location matters more than people expect. Panchang timings are calculated against local sunrise and sunset, so the same day divides differently in Pune, in Dubai and in New Jersey. A muhurat given for one city cannot simply be applied in another.
If a birth time is uncertain or unavailable, say so rather than estimating it. We will tell you what can still be done and what cannot.
For clients outside India
Muhurat consultation is conducted remotely and has been for clients in the USA, UK, UAE, Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands and Tanzania. Birth details and the event location are shared in advance, the calculation is done here, and the resulting timing is given in your local time zone rather than in Indian time, so there is nothing to convert at your end. Calls are scheduled to suit the difference between your time zone and ours.
